BIOGRAPHY
when archie was 6 years old, his mother died. to this day, he carries a photo of her with him, and hums snatches of an old lullaby he remembers her singing to him. she was his first experience with death and grief, but would certainly not be his last.being from texas, his whole family was christian, and religion was a pretty big part of his childhood. he didn’t understand why god would take his mother, a kind and loving person who could never hurt a soul, and thought maybe it was a punishment for him - leaving him alone with his father. he was not a bad man, but he was a bad father. it was clear he had never been ready to be a single father, and combined with the stress of the loss of his wife, he struggled to care for archie. he was drunk and angry, though he never laid a violent hand on archie, and his unpreparedness could never excuse the way he treated him.in school, archie didn’t perform too well. he just isn’t book smart, and his undiagnosed dyslexia certainly didn’t help either. where he did do well, though, was in sports - he was quarterback on the school’s football team, and certainly built for it too. as he grew older and more independent, he began to butt heads with his father a lot more, their house still often filled with anger - though now it was from the both of them. when he was 17, archie’s father found him kissing a boy in their living room. that was the most afraid archie had ever been of his father, despite the fact he was now both taller and larger than him. the argument that followed was the biggest they’d ever had, and the final straw for archie - he was now certain about his decision to leave for the military as soon as he could.at 18, archie joined the us marines. this, he found, was finally where he belonged. with his large build and gruff nature he fit in well, and it turned out that fighting was something he was very skilled as. he started out in infantry, where he served for 11 years, until an injury changed his course. while deployed, his whole squad was killed in an ambush and he was injured by and IED, leaving him with a brain injury, extensive scarring over the right side of his face, and burns on his right arm.he was out of action for a long while after this incident, though he eventually made enough of a recovery to continue serving. he felt like he needed a change after it, though, and decided instead he would change his MOS and pursue being a dog handler, liking the prospect of the companionship. this first required serving as a military policeman, which he did so, and eventually he succeeded in reaching training to become a dog handler. here, he was assigned his german shepherd cerberus, and the two of them formed a close bond very quickly, continuing to work effortlessly together into the present.
OTHER
these days archie no longer believes in god, having seen far too much cruelty, but religion has left its marks on him in other ways.
his father used to take him out hunting as a child, the first time being when he was 9. the first time archie shot and killed an animal was when he was 10 years old and he cried, which his father reprimanded him for.
he carried a journal with him when he can and likes to sketch landscapes. when he has the time and equipment, he especially enjoys watercolour painting and charcoal sketching.
archie's dyslexia is still undiagnosed, he believes he is just terrible at reading and spelling.
he looks intimidating and can be somewhat standoffish towards strangers, but in general he is kind and polite - if a little awkward. however, he's not afraid to use his strength if he feels he needs to, no matter the situation.
while on the job his intimidation factor is useful and he appreciates it, he does not when he's not working. he may be more on the introverted side, but he doesn't enjoy how off-putting he believes his facial scars make him look, nor how they tend to make some people nervous.
archie's a big fan of whiskey. he prefers sweeter ones like bourbon or tennesse, due to the sweet tooth he's never been able to kick.
he learned how to drive when he was 17 and bought his first vehicle soon after, a truck which he still has and drives to this day. he does as many repairs and services to it he can himself.
he is (so far rather unsuccessfully) trying to quit smoking.
